ADAM and EVE sit underneath a swirl of stars and galaxies. They’re naked under a shared blanket smoking grass as they marvel at pristine nature.
EVE. So do you think it’s just the two of us? You and me?
ADAM. Yes. Well, no.
EVE. Yes? No?
ADAM. Yes and no.
EVE. I think I understand.
ADAM. Oh yeah?
EVE. In our own little world it’s just us. But its never just us.
ADAM. Even though I wish it were most times.
EVE. But it’s okay because we have this.
ADAM. What’s this?
EVE. You have to ask? You have no idea where we are do you?
ADAM. You know...I wasn’t gonna say anything but this place is...I dunno...unfamiliar, I guess.
EVE. So you’ve never been here before.
ADAM. You know, Eve, it’s so familiar. I feel like I’ve been here before but I know I never have.
EVE. I’ve been to places like this before...but it’s never been this visceral. It’s like I’ve been to
the fuzzy version of this place but it’s coming in crystal clear tonight.
ADAM. Yeah, maybe that’s it. It’s beautiful.
EVE. Isn’t it? The stars have never shone brighter.
ADAM. I feel like I’ve never seen them until now.
EVE. Adam?
ADAM. Yeah?
EVE. What if I left?
ADAM. Why would you leave?
EVE. I don’t know. Just supposing.
ADAM. How bout we just suppose you and I will be here forever?
EVE. Do things ever last forever?
ADAM. They can.
EVE. Not in my experience.
ADAM. Well, you don’t have all that much experience, now do you? Not saying I have more or anything...
EVE. I mean, I do have experience.
ADAM. We all do. We all have our experiences which translates to experience here and around. But I’ve seen the sun and you’ve seen the sun, right?
EVE. Yeah.
ADAM. And every morning the sun comes up and every night the sun goes down, right?
EVE. Yeah.
ADAM. Every single day. Every day since we showed up, right? So, the sun is forever. As long as the sun rises and falls, we can live here forever.
EVE. I like that.
ADAM. Thought you might.
EVE. But what about the day when the sun doesn’t rise?
ADAM. I can only hope we don’t see that day.
EVE. And it’s not like we see the moon every night.
ADAM. Well the moon is something else entirely.
EVE. I don’t know about that.
The two sit in silence. Pack another bowl, then pass back and forth.
ADAM. I could live here forever.
EVE. I could...
ADAM. You could but...
EVE. Is there more? I always feel like there’s more.
ADAM. But we’re here. We did it. We made it. Look above, look around.
EVE. Maybe you and I could travel.
ADAM. What do you mean "could?"
EVE. I’m just saying we don’t need to be under this blanket forever.
ADAM. Something tells me we’re always going to be under this blanket.
EVE. Oh...
ADAM. I don’t mean that as a bad thing. And I’m not saying we won’t get out there and see what there is to see, I’m just saying this blanket is going everywhere I go. And If I see you, I’ll always invite you underneath.
EVE. And I’ll always crawl right up to you and burrow in your chest.
ADAM. I can only hope.
The two look up and around, admiring their natural surroundings.
EVE. It’s really beautiful out here. It’s perfect.
ADAM. Yeah. It is, isn’t it? What do they call this?
EVE. The Astral Plane.
ADAM. Where we are right now?
EVE. Where we are all the time. If you go there and I go here, we’ll still be on the Astral Plane together.
ADAM. Even if I’m a hundred miles away?
EVE. Even if you’re a million miles away on one of those distant stars. When we close our eyes and snuggle up close, we’ll talk to each other in our dreams. We’ll talk to each other without even talking to each other.
ADAM. It’s funny you should say that.
EVE. Why’s that?
ADAM. I went out today for that walk around, remember?
EVE. Of course.
ADAM. And I was walking and walking, passing tree after tree moving further and further away from home until I was at the base of the mountain.
EVE. The mountain far east?
ADAM. Western.
EVE. You walked all that way?
ADAM. Yeah. And I started climbing it.
EVE. You did?
ADAM. For you.
EVE. Not for me.
ADAM. Well, mostly for me. But it was for you. In my heart it was all because of you.
EVE. Yeah?
ADAM. And I was climbing this enormous, ridiculous mountain that nobody ever need climb and I started talking out loud.
EVE. Yeah, cuz you’re out of your fucking mind.
ADAM. Maybe. But I was talking to you. Like you were right there. I’m hauling myself up this big rock and I feel like you’re hugging me. The whole trip, it was like you were standing by my side, step for step-- sharing footprints.
EVE. But I was at home. Why didn’t you just stay at home with me?
ADAM. You’ve seen that mountain.
EVE. Yeah. I have.
The two share sweet silence. They kiss each other.
EVE. I feel like something big is gonna happen.
ADAM. Big things are happening.
EVE. Yeah, but I feel like really big things are in store. I can’t explain it.
ADAM. Well, I believe you. Haven’t been able to shake that feeling for a while.
EVE. Something really big.
ADAM. Have any idea if it’s good or bad?
EVE. It doesn’t matter, does it? It’s just change, no matter what it is.
ADAM. It doesn’t matter as long as we have each other. And we have each other, right?
EVE. Forever.
